Spanish store chain withdraws burgers

MADRID (AP) — A Spanish supermarket chain has withdrawn its own-brand hamburgers after a consumer protection group found tiny traces of horsemeat in them.

Earlier this month, millions of burgers were taken off the shelves of UK and Irish supermarkets following similar research there. Spanish chain AhorraMas said Tuesday it would withdraw its Alipende brand burgers following the study.

The Organization of Consumers Unions said traces of horsemeat were also found in one other supermarket brand. It said that, just as in Britain and Ireland, many brands failed to give a full breakdown of ingredients and percentages on their labels.

The group said there was no danger to health. Horsemeat is produced in Spain but not commonly eaten.
