AMSTERDAM (AP) — The Netherlands' finance minister has called for ordinary workers in the banking sector to take pay cuts, arguing that as almost every Dutch lender has had government help, they should be receiving salaries more befitting public servants.
The remarks made by Jeroen Dijsselbloem in an interview published in De Telegraaf newspaper Monday have prompted angry responses from labor unions, who say salary arrangements are outside his purview and he should focus instead on cutting executive pay.
After the nationalization of SNS Reaal NV earlier this month, a fight broke out in parliament over the proposed €550,000 ($736,000) base salary of SNS's new state-appointed chief executive Gerard van Olphen.
