Austria wins Nordic Combined team sprint race

KUUSAMO, Finland (AP) — Austria won the team sprint in the Nordic Combined on the back of strong jumps in the first phase of the World Cup event on Sunday.

The Austrian team of Bernhard Gruber and Mario Stecher jumped for a combined 246 points, giving them a 28-second lead over the Norway II team of Mikko Kokslien and Haavard Klemetsen heading into the cross-country skiing part of the event.

The Norwegians closed the gap with aggressive skiing in the relay race — with each athlete skiing five laps of 1,500 meters — but they still finished 5.4 seconds behind the winners to take second place.

The French pair of Sebastien Lacroix and Jason Chappuis finished third, crossing the line 6.2 seconds behind the Austrians.
