WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish authorities have canceled the lease for a cellar pub that was to be named after Josef Fritzl, an Austrian man serving a life sentence for locking his daughter in a basement, raping her and fathering her seven children.
A businessman had planned to open "Fritzl's Cellar" in Warsaw's elegant Nowy Swiat street in what he described as a "publicity stunt." A state official representing the interests of children has protested to the Town Hall and Internet surfers have expressed shock.
Warsaw Mayor Wojciech Bartelski said Wednesday he has canceled the lease and told the prosecutors about the stunt using one of the "greatest beasts of our times," in violation of the ban on public promotion of crime.
The businessman could face up to one year in prison if convicted.
