Drugs seized from Guyana timber shipment

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Customs agents in Guyana have found a large shipment of cocaine in a load of timber bound for the Netherlands.

The commissioner general of the Guyana Revenue Authority said the agents found nearly 700 pounds (317 kilograms) of cocaine inside hollowed-out logs. Kurshid Sattaur said the timber was about to be shipped to the Dutch port of Rotterdam when it was discovered late Tuesday.

Four people have been arrested including a Dutch citizen. Their names were not released. It was among the largest seizures of cocaine in the South American nation in recent months. In December, officials found 580 pounds of cocaine (263 kilograms) of the drug in a shipment of fish food bound for China.
