BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania's highest court has upheld a three-year prison sentence for two former agriculture ministers convicted of bribery and influence peddling.
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the appeal of Decebal Traian Remes and Ioan Muresan, who were convicted in February 2012. Remes resigned his Cabinet post in 2007 after prosecutors accused him of taking a bribe of $21,000 (€15,700) and the promise of homemade sausages and plum brandy from Muresan, a former agriculture minister who allegedly was acting on behalf of a businessman.
Prosecutors said the payment was meant to secure favor for the company of businessman Gheorghe Ciorba at a public auction. Ciorba, however, reported the bribe to authorities before the auction took place.
Former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase is currently serving a two-year prison sentence for illegally raising money for a 2004 failed presidential campaign.
