BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The youth wing of Hungary's governing party is asking Amnesty International to investigate recent attacks against ethnic Hungarians in Serbia.
Wednesday's petition by Fidelitas, part of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's ruling Fidesz party, was also signed by a dozen other youth groups from neighboring countries, where some 2.5 million ethnic Hungarians live in areas Hungary lost after World War I.
Some 300,000 ethnic Hungarians live in Serbia, most in its northern province of Vojvodina. The petition says the attacks, mostly on young people, are ethnically motivated, affecting the victims' "fundamental human rights and harming the spirit of European integration."
Serbia is a candidate to join the European Union, which Hungary joined in 2004.
