UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council is urging the U.N. war crimes tribunal for former Yugoslavia to take "all possible measures" to complete its trials and appeals on schedule by Dec. 31, 2014.
In a resolution adopted Monday by a vote of 14-0 with Russia abstaining, the council extended the terms of a number of judges so they can finish the cases assigned to them. The council asked the tribunal to present a plan by April 15, 2013 on completing its cases and transferring all remaining tasks to a new international body.
Earlier this month, Russia denounced the tribunal for freeing two Croatian generals and Kosovo's ex-prime minister who were accused of war crimes or crimes against humanity against Serbs and vowed to ensure that its work is completed on time.
