Lithuania basketball exec held in corruption probe

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — A Lithuanian court has charged a top Lithuanian basketball executive with corruption in connection with the European basketball championship in 2011.

The Panevezys court on Wednesday ordered that the secretary general of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, Mindaugas Balciunas, be kept in custody for 20 days while investigators probe allegations of embezzlement, fraud and document forgery.

Investigators say that Balciunas and two others are suspected of concluding fraudulent contracts for the reconstruction of a private hotel in Panevezys, a city in northern Lithuania where group matches were held. More than 2 million litas ($750,000) in state funds were spent on rebuilding the hotel, where the eventual champion Spanish team spent one week.

Balciunas has denied the allegations.
