ST. ANTON, Austria (AP) — Lara Gut of Switzerland led the field by more than a second in the first training session for a women's World Cup downhill on Thursday, while Lindsey Vonn finished 3.98 seconds behind upon her return to the circuit.
Gut finished the 2.2-kilometer Karl Schranz course in 1 minute, 38.31 seconds. Anna Fenninger of Austria was 1.02 seconds back, and Daniela Merighetti of Italy and Andrea Fischbacher of Austria shared third, a further 0.01 behind.
Gut and several other racers missed a gate, which would have led to disqualification in a race. Vonn had the 24th fastest time on the bumpy and challenging course following her three-week break to recover from intestinal illness.
Another training session is scheduled for Friday, followed by the downhill race and a super-G this weekend.
