Women's downhill training in Cortina canceled

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Local organizers have canceled Thursday's opening downhill training session for this weekend's women's World Cup race because of forecasts of heavy snow.

Another training session Friday remains on the schedule before Saturday's downhill race. The weekend concludes with a super-G race Sunday. World Cup rules require at least one official training session to be held before a downhill race.

The weather is supposed to improve after Thursday. Having returned to the circuit last weekend after a three-week break, four-time overall World Cup winner Lindsey Vonn will be aiming this weekend for her first victory in more than a month.

Vonn has six career wins and 13 podium finishes in Cortina, including her first nine years ago.
