KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) — Kristin Stoermer Steira claimed her first cross-country World Cup victory of the season Saturday by winning a women's 15-kilometer skiathlon race on the course that will be used for the Sochi Olympics.
The Norwegian finished the race in 46 minutes, 17.7 seconds as skiers got a taste of the Laura cross-country and biathlon center that will be used for next year's Winter Games. Yulia Tchekaleva of Russia was second, 19.2 seconds behind. Germany's Nicole Fessel was another 0.7 seconds back for third.
Overall World Cup leader Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland led early but later dropped back and had to retire after six kilometers. Steira took the lead after the 5K mark and then dominated the freestyle leg of the race.
The men's 30K race was scheduled for later Saturday.
