KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) — Bernhard Gruber pulled away from the pack with 400 meters left Saturday to earn his first Nordic combined World Cup victory of the season.
The Austrian was second after the ski jump with a leap of 129.5 meters on the large hill, and then finished the 10-kilometer cross-country race in 28 minutes, 19.7 seconds on the course that will be used for the Sochi Olympics next year.
Overall World Cup leader Eric Frenzel of Germany was second, 14.1 seconds behind. Wilhelm Denifl of Austria was another 1.4 seconds behind for third. After 14 of 19 events this season, Frenzel leads the standings with 754 points. He is followed by Jason Lamy Chappuis of France with 653, while Gruber moved up to third with 568.
The World Cup meet wraps up Sunday with a team event.
