SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Double Olympic champion Charles Hamelin of Canada won the men's 1,000-meter race at a short-track speedskating World Cup event on Sunday.
The Canadian claimed his third victory of the season in 1 minute, 26.957 seconds at the Iceberg arena, which will host the short-track and figure skating events at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Semen Elistratov of Russia was second in 1:27.034. American J.R. Celski clocked 1:27.069 for third.
Wu Daijing led China's 1-2 finish in the men's 500. Wu won in 41.702 seconds with Yu Jiyang second in 41.814. Russia's Vladimir Grigorev was third. Vancouver Olympics bronze medalist Park Seung-hi of South Korea won the women's 1,000-meters in 1:30.553. World Cup discipline leader Elise Christie of Britain finished second with a time of 1:30.757. Shim Suk-Hee of South Korea was third.
Fan Kexin of China clocked 44.195 seconds to win the women's 500. Italy's Arianna Fontana was second in 44.629, while Gabrielle Waddell of Canada timed 58.661 for third. Viktor An slipped past Sjinkie Knegt with two turns to go to lead Russia to its first victory this season in the men's 5,000-meter relay.
The Russian team of Evgenii Kozulin, Semen Elistratov, Grigorev and An clocked 6:53.585. The Netherlands (Niels Kerstholt, Daan Breeuwsma, Freek Van der Wart and Knegt) was second in 6:53.669. China finished third.
China — Liu Qiuhong, Wang Meng, Fan Kexin and Li Jianrou — won the women's 3,000 relay in 4 minutes, 11.555 seconds. The Canadian team of Marie-Eve Drolet, Valwerie Maltais, Marianne St-Gelais and Jessica Hewitt finished second in 4:12.118. Italy was third.
The last stop of the short track World Cup this season is scheduled for Feb. 8-9 in Dresden, Germany.
