THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The Vanansoleil-DCM cycling team says Dutch rider Johnny Hoogerland remains in intensive care with fractured ribs and chipped bones in his back after a crash in training and will miss the entire spring season.
Hoogerland was hospitalized Sunday after colliding with a car while training in Spain. There were fears he had torn his liver, but the team said Monday tests showed the liver was only bruised. The team says the results were "a huge relief for the seriously injured rider" who is expected to remain in intensive care until midweek.
It is not the first time Hoogerland has tangled with a car. In the 2011 Tour de France, he suffered serious cuts after being clipped by a car and sent spinning into a barbed wire fence.
