TAUNTON, England (AP) — Nick Compton staked a late claim for an England recall for the upcoming Ashes series by hitting 81 for Somerset against Australia in a tour match on Wednesday, overshadowing captain Michael Clarke's return to action for the tourists.
Compton's hopes of starting the first test against Australia next month were dented on Monday when he was dropped for England's four-day Ashes warm-up match against Essex, with selectors saying Joe Root was the preferred opener alongside captain Alastair Cook.
In an emphatic response, Compton struck 13 fours in an impressive 144-ball knock for Somerset against a close-to-full-strength Australian attack on the opening day at Taunton. Clarke was selected by Australia for his first match in three months after a back injury. He wasn't expected to bat until at least Thursday.
