Everton wins 2-1 at Newcastle in Premier League

NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — Everton hit back from conceding an early goal Wednesday to win 2-1 at Newcastle and inflict the hosts' ninth loss in their past 11 Premier League games.

After unmarked Papiss Cisse's looping header gave Newcastle the lead after only 72 seconds at St. James' Park, Everton leveled through Leighton Baines' thunderbolt of a free kick in the 43rd that swerved beyond goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Substitute Victor Anichebe tapped in the winner in the 60th to provisionally lift Everton to fifth place in the standings. Baines says "if we can stay around the boys at the top as long as we can hopefully we will give ourselves something to go for at the end of the season."

Newcastle stayed in 15th place, two points above the relegation zone.
