Barcelona defender Puyol signs 3-year extension

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has signed a three-year contract extension that will likely see him finish his career at his boyhood club.

The 34-year-old Spain international says "I am very happy — my plan was to stay on here for as many years as I could." Puyol's contract was set to run out at the end of this season. Puyol debuted with Barcelona's first team in 1999. He has been team captain since 2004, and has helped the club win three Champions League titles and five Spanish league championships, along with various other trophies.

Barcelona leads the Spanish league by eight points.
