Simeone extends deal as Atletico coach until 2017

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid has extended coach Diego Simeone's contract for the next four seasons.

The Spanish club said Tuesday in a statement that the two parties "have reached an agreement that seals his continuity as Atletico coach on the bench until 2017." Under Simeone, Atletico won the Europa League last year, the European Super Cup against Chelsea at the start of this season. The team is also in the Copa del Rey final and is currently second in the Spanish league behind Barcelona.

Simeone was an Atletico player from 1994-97 and 2003-05, during which time he helped the club win the league and Copa in 1996. The former Argentina midfielder became Atletico coach in December 2011.
