GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — UEFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Schalke following trouble during Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against visiting Greek side PAOK.
The Bundesliga club says on its website "the allegations against the Royal Blues concern the alleged display of political banners, crowd trouble and late submission of team sheets." Schalke is seeking legal advice and will plead not guilty.
During Wednesday's 1-1 draw, police used pepper spray and batons against Schalke supporters to forcibly remove a Macedonian banner. Police said 30 people needed medical attention. Police chief Klaus Sitzer said the measures were necessary because about 2,000 Greek supporters provoked by the banner had threatened to invade the pitch and attack opposing fans.
Greece has a long-running dispute with Macedonia over its name. Schalke criticized the police response as "disproportionate."
