LONDON (AP) — Prosecutors in Britain have charged a mining company and a manager with manslaughter over the deaths of four miners in 2011.
The four miners died at the Gleision mine in south Wales in September 2011, when the mine they were working in was engulfed by a huge rush of water. Prosecutors said Friday that 57-year-old pit manager Malcolm Fyfield has been charged with four counts of gross negligence manslaughter. He allegedly breached health and safety rules and caused the miners' deaths.
MNS Mining Ltd. has also been charged with four counts of corporate manslaughter for allegedly causing the deaths by failing to ensure a safe work environment. Fyfield and a representative of the company will appear in court on Feb. 1.
