WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's prime minister says he believes the discovery of corruption in the country's road construction sector should not hurt its standing in the European Union even though the wrongdoing led the bloc to freeze millions of euros in development aid.
The European Commission earlier this week suspended about €840 million ($1.1 billion) for Poland to build roads because of the discovery of price fixing. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday that the commission's move came only thanks to Polish investigations that uncovered price fixing and led to charges against 11 people.
Tusk said the funds should eventually be unfrozen and that the country's role in fighting the wrongdoing should help it maintain its reputation, saying "so far there haven't been such cases and Poland is considered reliable in Europe."
