PARIS (AP) — With colored wigs, African-style clothes and noisemakers, employees of a posh Paris hotel and labor leaders have led a protest over pay — saying a single night in its most luxury suite costs more than some of their annual salaries.
Dozens of chambermaids and their supporters timed Tuesday's protest outside the Park Hyatt Hotel-Vendome to coincide with Paris Fashion Week, when Paris hosts many VIP guests. They started a strike there Friday.
Blowing whistles, waving red flags of the Communist-backed CGT labor union, and shouting, "You need to pay," the protesters insisted the chambermaids earn much less than counterparts at other high-end hotels.
The hotel said it regretted the situation but was "in no way involved" — saying the dispute involved a maintenance and upkeep subcontractor and its employees.
