BERLIN (AP) — Germany's Interior Ministry says the country's aid to the fight in Mali against Islamic extremists could prompt individuals to attempt terrorist attacks on Germany or its interests abroad.
The ministry stressed Tuesday it has no indications that any attacks are being planned, but said it "could not rule out" that Germany's help for Mali could be used by extremists for propaganda intended to promote terrorist attacks.
Germany has committed two C-160 Transall planes to transport African troops to Mali's capital Bamako, at a cost of about $3 million monthly, and the Defense Ministry said it was sending a third C-160 there Tuesday. It also hopes to send a refueling plane to help French military efforts.
Germany is also contributing $20 million (€15 million) to a U.N. fund to support Mali.
