ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Police on the Greek island of Crete say they have arrested one man and are seeking another 10 suspects in connection with the severe beating of three Pakistani immigrants.
A police statement Thursday said the "unprovoked" attack took place in the island's Lerapetra area. The three Pakistani men were hospitalized and out of danger. Racist attacks on immigrants have surged in the recession-bound country, which is experiencing record high unemployment amid its acute debt crisis. A Pakistani man was stabbed to death in Athens last month.
Also Thursday, police took the unusual step of publishing the photos and details of two Greek men arrested in Athens last week for weapons offences and suspected of racist attacks. Police provided hotlines for potential victims to contact them anonymously.
