VIENNA (AP) — Austrian police have detained the second suspected Turkish leftist extremist in a month.
Interior Ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck says the man is suspected of membership in the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front. That's the same left-extremist organization that the previously detained suspect is believed to belong to.
The latest arrest occurred Tuesday. Officials said Thursday both are awaiting extradition to Germany, where they are sought by warrant. The group has its origins in the late 1970s and has claimed responsibility for numerous assassinations and bombings. Turkey, the United States and the European Union consider it a terrorist organization.
Turkish police identified a man who blew himself up at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara earlier this year as a group member. A Turkish security guard was killed and several other people were wounded.
