Greece: 6 guards jailed for inmate's torture-death

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Court officials in northern Greece say six prison guards have been jailed pending trial for their alleged involvement in the torture and death of an Albanian inmate.

The 42-year-old prisoner, Ilie Kareli, was accused of fatally stabbing a prison guard last month and died in isolation shortly afterward. A state coroner said he had died from injuries inflicted from a severe beating.

The six prison officials have been charged with torture resulting in death, and face a maximum of life in prison if convicted. Two other guards charged with the same offense were released from custody, while a further seven have been summoned to testify before the public prosecutor in charge of the investigation.
