German injured in kidnapping attempt in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemeni security officials say a German diplomat has been injured in a kidnapping attempt in the capital, Sanaa.

Unknown gunmen tried to stop the car of two German diplomats Monday in the southern Hadda neighborhood, home to many of the city's embassies, officials said. When the two men did not stop their car, the would-be kidnappers opened fire and one of the Germans sustained light injuries.

Abductions are frequent in Yemen, an impoverished nation where armed tribesmen and al-Qaeda-linked militants take hostages to swap for prisoners or cash. Yemen has been roiled by instability since the 2011 uprisings that forced longtime dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.
