Britain pledges $4.7M for Somalia's new government

LONDON (AP) — The British government says it will give 3 million pounds ($4.7 million) in new aid to Somalia to help the war-ravaged nation's institutions and its malnourished mothers and children.

The announcement comes as Somalia's president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is in London for a meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron. Britain's International Development Secretary Justine Greening announced the new aid pledge on Monday, saying the U.K. will help train Somali lawmakers and will provide parliamentary and constitutional advice.

Half of the money will go to the World Food Program to help 59,300 malnourished children and mothers in Somalia, which has endured years of civil war.
