Kenyan evangelist charged with rape, assault in UK

LONDON (AP) — A self-styled Kenyan preacher who claimed to help couples conceive "miracle babies" through prayer has been charged with three counts of rape in Britain.

Police said Monday that Gilbert Deya, 61, was charged last week with rape, one count of attempted rape on an adult and one count of sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl. Deya has claimed to help infertile couples conceive "through the power of prayer and the Lord Jesus."

Britain's Home Office could not immediately answer why Deya — who lost a battle against extradition to Kenya to face kidnapping charges — is still in Britain. London's Metropolitan Police said Deya will appear in court Nov. 8.
