Barroso: Very tough for Scotland to join EU

LONDON (AP) — The European Commission's president says it would be very tough for Scotland to join the EU if voters decide to break away from Britain later this year.

Jose Manuel Barroso told BBC on Sunday it would be "extremely difficult, if not impossible" for Scotland to get all 28 EU nations to approve it as a new member if voters there decide to leave Britain and form an independent country.

Other EU figures have made similar comments before, but Barroso's words came as a stark warning before the binding referendum in Scotland in September. Chancellor George Osborne has also warned Scottish voters that it will not be able to join a currency union and use the British pound if it votes for separation.
