BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Most state-run schools in Slovakia have been closed after teachers demanding a 10 percent pay rise have gone on strike.
The government says it does not have the funds to meet the teacher's demand, and can only offer a five percent rise, at a time when the country had to adopt cuts to its budget to deal with the EU wide financial crisis.
Most church and private schools are not participating in the strike. Protest rallies by teachers have been taking place in major cities, including Bratislava, Kosice and Banska Bystrica.
