Brazil releases former Turks & Caicos leader

SAO PAULO (AP) — A Brazilian Supreme Court justice has ordered the release of the former premier of in the Turks & Caicos Islands who was arrested in Rio de Janeiro on an extradition request from the British government.

Ex-premier Michael Misick is accused of corruption while he was the leader of the British Caribbean territory. He was arrested in December on a warrant issued by Interpol. Misick was released from custody on Friday. He cannot leave Brazil and he still faces extradition.

Supreme Court Justice Ricardo Lewandowski said in a ruling that the British government had not delivered all the paperwork necessary for Misick's extradition within the specified 60 days after his arrest, so he ordered his release.

The justice gave the UK government another 60 days to complete the extradition request.
