Prize money soars in British horseracing

LONDON (AP) — Britain's largest commercial horseracing group is injecting an extra 5 million pounds ($8.15 million) in prize money in 2013, swelling the overall cash pot for its races to 40 million pounds ($65 million).

The Jockey Club will stage 361 meetings across 15 courses next year, with its races including four of the five flatracing classics, the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National Steeplechase in April.

The body says its announcement is a good "indicator of the overall health" of the sport in Britain.
