Clarey leads French 1-2 in downhill training run

WENGEN, Switzerland (AP) — Johan Clarey was fastest in a downhill training run Wednesday on the full Lauberhorn course, the longest on the World Cup circuit.

Clarey timed 2 minutes, 34.62 seconds to lead a French 1-2, edging teammate Adrien Theaux by 0.08 seconds along the quirky 4.415-kilometer (2.74-mile) track. At the fastest section on tour, Clarey was clocked at exactly 150 kilometers per hour (93.2 mph).

Klaus Kroell of Austria, the 2011 Lauberhorn winner, was third, trailing Clarey by 0.11. Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who leads the World Cup downhill standings, was 0.19 back in fourth. Racers came down the classic course under bright sunshine after morning clouds cleared, and could have a third training run Thursday.

A super-combined event is scheduled Friday, and the downhill is Saturday.
