Def. champ Merighetti leads Cortina DH training

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Defending champion Daniela Merighetti of Italy led the only training session Friday for the annual World Cup downhill on the Olympia delle Tofane course.

Merighetti, who notched her only career win in Cortina last year, finished in 1 minute, 40.03 seconds. Overall World Cup leader Tina Maze was second, 0.22 seconds behind, and defending overall winner Lindsey Vonn was third, 0.60 behind, as she attempts to win her first race since taking a three-week break to recover from intestinal problems.

Vonn has six career wins in Cortina, while Maze is seeking her first. Thursday's training session was canceled so organizers could clear fresh snow off the course. The downhill race is Saturday, followed by a super-G on Sunday.

Austrian downhiller Anna Fenninger fell in training but was not seriously injured.
