Lancaster to be given wider role after RFU review

LONDON (AP) — England coach Stuart Lancaster will head up a newly created international performance department as part of a revamp of the Rugby Football Union.

Lancaster will retain his current position and be in overall charge of a department that will focus on creating a "pathway" for players to senior international rugby. It was one of a number of recommendations made after a thorough review of the professional game in England by former British and Irish Lions coach Ian McGeechan and Peter Keen, who was a special advisor for UK Sport in the run-up to the London Olympics.

The RFU is also recommending that a national performance centre should be built to "provide the world's best developmental environment for players and staff."
