THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The Vacansoleil-DCM professional cycling team says Dutch rider Johnny Hoogerland has been hospitalized after colliding with a car while training in Spain.
The team says Hoogerland was taken to intensive care in the town of Villajoyosa's hospital after the crash Sunday and diagnosed with rib fractures and other injuries that will be assessed in further tests Monday.
The team did not release any further details of the 29-year-old's condition. Vacansoleil says Hoogerland was riding downhill when "a turning car didn't see the rider and hit the unfortunate Hoogerland."
It is not the first time Hoogerland has tangled with a car. In the 2011 Tour de France, he suffered serious cuts after being clipped by a car and sent spinning into a barbed wire fence.
