Weeks after speed record, Clarey out of ski worlds

SCHLADMING, Austria (AP) — The fastest skier ever clocked on the World Cup circuit is out of the world championships.

The French team says that downhiller Johan Clarey was undergoing back surgery Monday after slipping and falling while walking at the weekend. He will be out for three months, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

The worlds begin Tuesday and Clarey was considered one of the contenders for Saturday's downhill. At the downhill in Wengen, Switzerland, last month, Clarey set the World Cup speed record on the Hanneggschuss straight at 161.9 kph (100.6 mph) — the fastest speed recorded in competition in 46 years of World Cup racing. He finished fifth.

Gauthier De Tessieres will replace Clarey in Wednesday's super-G.
