PEORIA, Arizona (AP) — Wladimir Balentien hit a three-run homer and finished with five RBIs to lead the Netherlands to an 8-1 win over the Seattle Mariners in an exhibition game on Friday.
Balentien, who played for the Mariners from 2007-09, homered against Seattle starter Jon Garland in the top of the first inning to score Jurickson Profar and Jonathan Schoop. He then added a two-run single in the second.
The Dutch team heads to San Francisco for the World Baseball Classic semifinals against the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico on Monday. The Netherlands beat the San Diego Padres 9-3 in another exhibition game Thursday.
Garland, who is returning to Major League Baseball after right shoulder surgery in July 2011, allowed five runs and six hits while striking out seven in three innings.
