BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Russia has completed another sweep of synchronized swimming at the world championships.
The Russians took all seven gold medals in the sport they have dominated for years, finishing up with a runaway victory in the free combination Saturday night at the Palau Sant Jordi. They totaled 97.060 points, though the biggest cheers from the near-sellout crowd went to the home team. Spain captured the silver medal with an Elvis Presley-themed performance, good enough for 94.620 points. Ukraine took the bronze with 93.350.
Russia repeated its synchro performance at the 2011 worlds in Shanghai, where it also went seven-for-seven. In fact, only four nations hoarded all the medals. Spain won silver or bronze in every event, while China and Ukraine divvied up the remaining medals.
