Heavy snow cancels Cortina downhill training

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — The second training session for the women's World Cup downhill in Cortina has been cancelled due to heavy snowfall.

Forecasts called for up to 30 centimeters (a foot) of fresh snow on the Olympia delle Tofane course. Racers already completed the first training on Thursday, meaning the downhill on Saturday can still go ahead as scheduled. A super-G race is scheduled for Sunday.

Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany led Tina Maze of Slovenia by 0.01 seconds in the opening training session. Cortina will also host speed races the following weekend, which were moved from Garmisch-Partenkirchen due to a lack of snow in the German resort.
