Thompson wins World Cup skicross title

LA PLAGNE, France (AP) — Olympic champion Marielle Thompson of Canada clinched the freestyle World Cup skicross title Sunday by winning the last event of the season.

Thompson beat world champion Fanny Smith of Switzerland in the final. Georgia Simmerling of Canada took third and Sandra Naeslund of Sweden placed fourth. Thompson gained her second crystal globe after also winning in 2012. She finished the season 25 points clear of Smith in the standings with Ophelie David of France a distant third.

"I'm very happy," Thompson said. "I did a lot of hard work over the summer and in the offseason, and it all definitely paid off with such a consistent and competitive season." Victor Oehling Norberg of Sweden captured his first World Cup title despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals, as his closest rival Andreas Matt of Austria went out at the same stage.

Olympic champion Jean-Frederic Chapuis of France beat Christoph Wahrstoetter of Austria in the men's final. Brady Leman of Canada came third and Andreas Schauer of Germany was fourth. Oehling Norberg topped the standings 12 points clear of Matt. Daniel Bohnacker of Germany finished third.

"It was a crazy day," Oehling Norberg said. "I had good times in training. And I felt that I could easily take the first place in this competition. And then I fell because I lost my ski. So it was very unfortunate, it was very disappointing. Then 10 minutes later, I was so happy, I was crying."
