Sunderland beats Southampton 1-0 in Premier League

SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) — Sunderland beat Southampton 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday at St. Mary's Stadium to secure just the second league victory away from home in 17 games.

After battling to a stalemate for much of the first half, the visitors scored in the 42nd minute when Steven Fletcher pounced on the ball inside the six-yard box after teammate Stephane Sessegnon scuffed his shot.

The win moves Sunderland up to 15th in the standings with 19 points while Southampton remains 17th on 15 points, ahead of Wigan on goal difference.
