Lambert rescues 1-1 draw for Southampton at Fulham

LONDON (AP) — Rickie Lambert scored a late penalty to ensure Southampton stayed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a 1-1 draw at Fulham on Wednesday.

Lambert netted in the 85th minute after Chris Baird was adjudged to have handled Gaston Ramirez's corner. Fulham had led since the eighth minute when Dimitar Berbatov slotted home after Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis fumbled Sascha Riether's cross into the Bulgarian forward's path.

The late leveler left Fulham manager Martin Jol saying: "I am like a thunderstorm, I am very angry." Fulham has now won just one match in 11 attempts, although the London club is six points from danger.

Southampton moved a point clear of the relegation zone, and manager Nigel Atkins said: "The players have shown a good resolve."
