Anouma gets court date for African election appeal

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — FIFA executive committee member Jacques Anouma will press his case at sports' highest court next week to be approved as a candidate to lead African football.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says Anouma's appeal has been set for on Feb. 1 to challenge the Confederation of African Football's new presidential election rules. A verdict is expected within days, which could allow the Ivory Coast official to run against 23-year incumbent Issa Hayatou in a vote scheduled for March 10 in Marrakech, Morocco.

Hayatou, a FIFA vice president from Cameroon, engineered a rule change last September which blocked Anouma's planned candidature. The rule allows only voting members of the CAF board to stand. Anouma's FIFA position gives him non-voting rights to attend CAF meetings.
