MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson says Rio Ferdinand will join up with the England squad, a day after indicating the defender's call-up could be blocked.
Ferdinand was recalled by England on Thursday for the first time in nearly two years for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro. However, the 34-year-old center back has long-standing fitness issues and Ferguson said Friday that he "has to make sure he's going to be OK in terms of the number of games he plays."
But after United's 1-0 victory over Reading on Saturday, Ferguson confirmed that Ferdinand would join up with the England squad on Monday. Ferdinand helped to set up Wayne Rooney's goal against Reading as United went 15 points clear in the Premier League title race.
