BERLIN (AP) — Former Germany international David Odonkor has retired at age 29 due to continuous injuries.
Odonkor became a national hero for one summer with his performances at the 2006 World Cup on home soil but is suffering from cartilage damage to his knee. After 16 appearances for his country from May 2006 to June 2008, Odonkor tells the Neuen Westfaelischen newspaper, "My family and I have decided that I won't play anymore, but coach instead."
Odonkor, the son of a German mother and Ghanaian father, made 75 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund before switching to Real Betis after his World Cup heroics. Injury hampered his contribution at the Spanish side and he returned to second-division Alemannia Aachen in 2011, before spending last season at Ukrainian Premier League side Hoverla Uzhhorod.
