KUWAIT CITY (AP) — Kuwait says the Gulf nation's ruler has approved a new government after weeks of political limbo over disputes with Islamists and other opposition forces in parliament.
The official Kuwait News Agency says the new cabinet keeps the prime minister and other key positions intact, but it is likely to hold a caretaker role. Kuwait's emir, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, is widely expected to dissolve parliament and call elections for later this year.
Last month, Kuwait's parliament was suspended and a court later declared the February elections unconstitutional over procedural issues. The voting was led by Islamists and other opponents of Kuwait's Western-allied rulers.
Kuwait has the Gulf's most politically independent parliament. It often demands to question top officials and has the ability to pass no-confidence votes on officials.
