AP PHOTOS: Scenes from the life of Ed Koch

Ed Koch was part politician, part showman, and for many, he was the embodiment of the combativeness and tenacity that is New York City. In three tumultuous terms as mayor in the late 1970s and '80s, Koch dealt with fiscal problems, racial unrest and corruption scandals, always asking his constituents "How'm I doin?" And even after his days in office were over, in a whirlwind career in which he was an author, radio talk-show host, pitchman and even a TV judge, Koch never seemed to stop campaigning and cheering for the city he loved.

Here are scenes from the life and times of Ed Koch, who died early Friday of congestive heart failure at age 88.
